Early in 2004 I was unfortunate enough to meet Pete B. Dont get me wrong, hes a lovely bloke, just dont start talking about bait is my advice. 3 hours later my head was spinning with all the talk of chemical vs. natural stimulants, enzymes, splitting proteins chains and amino acids. I was about ready to collapse!
One fortunate thing to come from that meeting was Pete asking if I fancied trying a few things out, Id be interested to see how they work on the type of waters you fish, Im so glad I said yes.
My first trip out with The Bait was also my first trip to a 90 acre gravel pit for a quick overnighter. The result, a 25lb Common. Second trip out was to the same lake for another quick overnighter. The result, a 33lb linear.
Nice though it was to catch a couple of fish like that so quickly from what is a difficult water, the lake involved quite a long drive for me, so I decided to try somewhere closer to home.
Id already fished the lake in the past, an extremely weedy 80 acre gravel pit that held just 15 or so Carp, and failed miserably. The amount of natural food the lake contains has to be seen to be believed, and is regarded as a mission impossible by many. You need less than the fingers on one hand to count the number of Carp that have been caught from this lake in the last 30 years. After a fair bit of looking, a little bit of baiting and in a grand total of fourteen nights fishing, I managed to catch three of those Carp. Happy daze!
A close friend took a bit of interest in The Bait after that, and it wasnt long before I gave him a few kilos to try out.
His first trip out with The Bait was to a notoriously hard 100+ acre gravel pit. A two night trip resulted in him catching mirrors of 25lb, and a new Pb of 36lb.
And thats pretty much how its gone since. Wherever we have taken The Bait, from heavily pressured small silty estate lakes to under fished and vastly under stocked 300 acre gravel pits, its never let us down.
With the release of the Enzyme, as it has now become known, earlier this year Ive been torn between two emotions. Unhappy that Ill be loosing an edge, being one of few that have had access to The Bait over the last couple of years, but happy that friends who have seen the results The Bait is capable of will now stop offering me their wives / girlfriends in exchange for a few kilos of the stuff!
And so the success has continued, most friends who have got on The bait since
its launch have had their best results for years, with one catching his first and second 30s along with his first 40 within 4 months of threading an Enzyme onto his rig!
Another couple of friends have decided to give it a go on the rivers, chasing Barbel. They too have been amazed at the reactions from heavily pressured fish. Often getting bites within minutes of casting out, they have taken a number of fish over 13lb from both the River Kennet and the Thames.
Funny thing is they are now in the position I was last year. Tell friends who ask what bait your using, or keep an edge to yourself and reap the rewards.
Try it, youll see what I mean.
